- Nigerian businessman and political commentator, Isaac Fayose, has challenged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his promise to resign if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike had reportedly made the statement while addressing leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja on Wednesday. He said he would submit his resignation on January 17 if Tinubu lost the FCT in the January 16 presidential poll.
The minister’s declaration has generated reactions on social media, with some users alleging that his statement could be linked to concerns about the conduct of the election.
Reacting to Wike’s position, Fayose, in a Facebook post on Thursday, claimed that Peter Obi would defeat Tinubu in both the FCT and Rivers State if the 2027 election is conducted freely and fairly.
Fayose argued that Obi, whom he identified as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, performed strongly in Abuja during the previous presidential election and would secure an even larger margin in 2027.
He said Abuja and Rivers State should not be regarded as guaranteed territories for Wike or the APC, while challenging the FCT minister to prepare for a different outcome if the election is credible.
Fayose also criticised the Tinubu administration, alleging that some individuals were supporting the President primarily because they benefited from his government.
He urged Nigerians to participate actively in the 2027 election and expressed confidence that a free and fair process would determine the outcome.
The comments come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and political groups already making claims about their expected strength across various states and constituencies.
