Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted an absolute pardon to 130 inmates and reduced the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Mutfwang announced the decision on Thursday while addressing Plateau residents and Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion of the October 1 anniversary.
According to a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Gyang Bere, the governor exercised the constitutional powers vested in him after consulting the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
The four inmates whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi.
Among those granted absolute pardon were Kamshine Gomerep, Maju Sajen, Jan Thomas, Gody Victor, Imran Maikasuwa, Biplang Emmanuel, Peace Sunday, Salisu Usman, Geoffrey John and Shwarpo Luka, among others.
The governor, while congratulating Nigerians on the Independence anniversary, described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, recognise the sacrifices of past leaders and consider the challenges and achievements recorded since independence.
He urged Nigerians to protect the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that nation-building was a responsibility shared across generations.
Mutfwang said every citizen had a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria.
He also commended Nigerians for their resilience and patriotism and urged them to remain committed to the country despite its challenges.
The governor acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in promoting national unity and stability, particularly his emphasis on peace, economic development and national cohesion.
Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Plateau State where residents can pursue their aspirations in an environment characterised by peace, security, justice and inclusive development.
He urged citizens to continue believing in Nigeria and contribute to building a country worthy of the sacrifices of its past heroes and the hopes of future generations.
