A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dele Momodu, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, describing the speech as overly focused on the difficulties facing Nigeria.
Drivetvnews gathered that Momodu expressed his views in a post on his verified X account on Thursday while reacting to Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
According to the publisher of Ovation Magazine, the President’s address transformed what should have been a day of celebration into what he described as a day of lamentation.
Momodu particularly took issue with Tinubu’s comparison of Nigeria’s economic condition to that of a cancer patient who had previously been given painkillers instead of receiving definitive treatment.
He said he found the analogy inappropriate, arguing that the country was in a less severe condition when Tinubu assumed office.
Momodu said the President should have focused on stabilising the country rather than portraying its condition in terms of a worsening illness.
He also questioned the economic and security situation, claiming that Nigeria had increased its revenues and borrowing while insecurity and poverty had worsened.
The ADC chieftain further criticised what he described as the insensitivity of some political leaders to the difficulties experienced by ordinary Nigerians.
Momodu acknowledged the significance of the Independence anniversary but said the President’s address did not sufficiently reflect the celebratory mood expected of the occasion.
He urged the administration to address the challenges confronting Nigerians while delivering on its promises to improve the country’s economic and social conditions.
