President Bola Tinubu has described former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar as one of his most trusted advisers, noting that the retired military leader prefers offering private counsel rather than publicly criticizing those in office.
Speaking during events marking Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday and the unveiling of three books in his honour, Tinubu said the former leader regularly shares advice through personal consultations and written recommendations. He added that the guidance has helped him in his role as president.
Tinubu also reflected on Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule in 1999, recalling that Abdulsalami played a key role in convincing pro-democracy activists living abroad that the military government was committed to handing over power. According to him, a personal phone call from Abdulsalami assured him of his safety and encouraged his return to Nigeria.
The President praised Abdulsalami for completing the transition process within 11 months and voluntarily transferring power to a civilian administration. He said the former military ruler chose national interest over personal ambition and helped lay the foundation for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Tinubu further commended Abdulsalami’s commitment to democratic governance, describing his leadership during a critical period in the country’s history as courageous and impactful.
