Human rights activist and President of the Centre for Change, Joe Okei-Odumakin, has congratulated Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a living legend whose life reflects Nigeria’s enduring struggle for justice, democracy and human rights.
Drivetvnews gathered In a statement titled “We Celebrate Kongi At 92,” Okei-Odumakin said Soyinka’s remarkable journey mirrors Nigeria’s turbulent history while symbolising the ideals generations of citizens have continued to pursue.
She described the Nobel Laureate as Nigeria’s “permanent Ambassador plenipotentiary,” noting that his global literary achievements have significantly enhanced the country’s international image.
According to her, Soyinka’s commitment to public service and national development has earned him a lasting place in Nigeria’s history, while his dedication to justice and opposition to oppression continue to inspire people both within and beyond the country.
Okei-Odumakin also commended Soyinka’s unwavering stance against injustice, authoritarianism and human rights abuses, describing him as a fearless voice for democratic values and accountability.
She concluded her tribute by praying for the elder statesman’s continued good health and long life.
Born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Soyinka became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. Beyond his celebrated literary works, he has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential public intellectuals, consistently speaking out on issues of governance, corruption, insecurity, freedom of expression and democracy.
