Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged the European Union to closely monitor the forthcoming governorship election in the state, saying international observation would strengthen transparency and ensure compliance with Nigeria’s Electoral Act.
Drivetvnews gathered that Adeleke made the appeal while receiving Austria’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Guschelbauer, at the Government House in Osogbo.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the presence of EU election observers would promote democratic best practices and contribute to the conduct of a free, fair and credible governorship poll.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful elections and an investor-friendly environment, noting that Osun offers significant opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, mining, technology, education and vocational development.
He also expressed the state government’s readiness to partner with Austria and European businesses to attract investment and foster economic growth.
In his remarks, Ambassador Guschelbauer said the European Union remains committed to promoting democratic governance through credible elections. He expressed hope that the Osun governorship election would be conducted in full compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws, describing the poll as an important precursor to the 2027 general elections.
The ambassador further commended the Adeleke administration for its governance efforts and urged all political stakeholders to adhere to the rules to ensure peace, stability and credible elections.
He also highlighted the long-standing cultural relationship between Austria and the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, pledging continued support for cultural preservation, tourism development and stronger business partnerships between Austrian companies and Osun State.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with 14 political parties expected to participate.
