A private school in the Fadeyi area of Lagos temporarily suspended academic activities on Tuesday to pay tribute to the late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.

Drivetvnews gathered that Great Josade School, located in Ereko, Fadeyi, where the deceased lived, announced the closure as a mark of respect during his burial. A banner displayed at the school entrance featured Ajiboye’s photograph alongside a message informing parents and pupils that classes would not hold in his honour.

Earlier in the day, family members, colleagues, friends and supporters gathered in Ketu, Lagos, to bid farewell to the union leader, with emotional scenes captured during the funeral ceremony.

Ajiboye died from gunshot wounds after unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle in Fadeyi on Sunday evening. The Lagos State Police Command has since launched an investigation and is pursuing those responsible for the killing.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that detectives had commenced investigations while efforts were underway to arrest the suspects behind the attack.

According to sources, Ajiboye had visited his childhood neighbourhood before he was ambushed while leaving the area. He was rushed to the hospital after the attack but later died from his injuries.

A member of the transport union revealed that three other occupants of the vehicle also sustained serious gunshot wounds and remain hospitalised as doctors continue efforts to save their lives.

Images circulating online after the incident showed the late union leader’s vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

Reacting to the tragedy, Lagos State NURTW Chairman Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal friend, dependable ally and dedicated union official whose contributions to the organisation would never be forgotten.

The motive behind the attack has yet to be established as police investigations continue.
