African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has promised to transform Nigeria into a major global sports hub if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Sowore made the pledge on Saturday in Enugu while participating in the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon.
The AAC candidate said Nigeria would qualify for every FIFA World Cup throughout his proposed eight-year tenure, while his administration would also invest in other sporting disciplines to improve the country’s performance on the international stage.
Sowore, who took part in the 10-kilometre race for the second time, said he decided to return after being impressed by the organisation of the previous edition.
He described road races as valuable for promoting healthy living, strengthening communities and engaging young people, and called on states across Nigeria to organise similar events.
However, he pointed out that the 10-kilometre event was technically not a marathon, explaining that a full marathon covers 42 kilometres, while a half marathon is 21 kilometres.
According to him, sporting events can improve public health, strengthen communities and create a connection between sports and culture.
Sowore also said the sports industry could provide young Nigerians with opportunities to become global ambassadors while generating substantial economic value.
He described sports as part of the “orange economy,” arguing that a properly developed sports sector could eventually generate more revenue for Nigeria than oil.
The presidential candidate cited Brazil and Kenya as examples of countries that have benefited economically and internationally from sports, particularly football and long-distance running.
He questioned why Nigeria, with its large population and abundant talent, has struggled to dominate international athletics and other sporting disciplines.
Sowore promised that his administration would develop sports infrastructure and create the necessary environment for athletes to succeed across different fields.
He said Nigeria had significant potential in swimming, athletics and other sports but had failed to convert its talent into international success because of poor administration and inadequate support.
Turning specifically to football, Sowore criticised the management of the sport in Nigeria and described the country’s failure to qualify for the World Cup as unacceptable.
He vowed to ensure that Nigeria consistently qualifies for the tournament throughout his proposed eight-year presidency.
Sowore said his administration would prioritise competence in sports administration and provide athletes with the conditions required to perform at their best.
He maintained that Nigeria possesses enough talent to become a leading sporting nation if the right structures and leadership are put in place.
