A UK-based Nigerian taxi driver, Kolawole Erunkulu, has been sentenced to six years in prison after falling asleep while driving and causing a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 59-year-old man.

The 45-year-old driver from Bexleyheath had reportedly driven for about 53 hours over three days before the incident, with only limited rest.

The crash happened on August 17, 2025, when Erunkulu’s Audi left the road and struck Philip Dray, who had stopped in a lay-by and was returning to his Volkswagen.

Footage recorded inside Erunkulu’s vehicle showed him briefly falling asleep shortly before the collision. He had also reportedly been working for about 12 hours before the crash, taking only short breaks.

Erunkulu pleaded guilty in June 2026 to causing death by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from driving for eight years. If he later seeks to regain his licence, he will be required to pass an extended driving test.

During sentencing, Her Honour Judge Lees said the evidence showed that Erunkulu was extremely fatigued and should have stopped driving.

Acting Detective Inspector Rob Baldwin of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said the case demonstrated the serious risks associated with driving while tired, particularly after long periods without adequate rest.

Dray’s family described him as a kind, dependable and caring man who lived quietly and treated people with respect. His partner said his death had left a significant emotional void in her life.

The case has renewed warnings about the dangers of driver fatigue, with authorities urging anyone who feels too tired to drive to stop and rest before continuing their journey.
