A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has suggested that President Bola Tinubu could potentially face criminal charges after leaving office over alleged links to heroin trafficking.
Drivetvnews gathered that the firm made the claim in a post on its verified X account on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, while discussing filings involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
According to the firm, the documents it reviewed do not establish that the US government plans to prosecute Tinubu. However, it said responses from the FBI and DEA to inquiries about the matter have raised questions about whether an investigation or enforcement proceeding could still be active.
The firm said both agencies were asked on separate occasions to confirm that, more than three decades after the underlying cases, there was no ongoing investigation or enforcement action relating to the allegations. It said neither agency agreed to make such a confirmation.
Instead, the agencies reportedly stated that they were not required to comment on whether a law enforcement investigation or proceeding might exist.
Von Batten-Montague-York said the agencies’ refusal does not prove that charges are imminent but argued that it leaves room for questions about the status of any possible investigation.
The firm further stated that, based on its reading of some court filings, it believes Tinubu could face prosecution after leaving office, when presidential immunity from foreign criminal jurisdiction no longer applies.
It also pointed to references to wiretaps in FBI and DEA filings and noted that some individuals connected to the underlying investigation have since died.
However, the allegations remain unproven, and the firm itself acknowledged that the available filings do not establish that US authorities intend to charge Tinubu.
