A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying organisation, Von Batten-Montague-York, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu could face embarrassment at the United Nations General Assembly in September if he attends the event.
Drivetvnews gathered that the firm made the claim in a post published on its verified X account on Monday, while also alleging that Tinubu’s proposed meeting with US President Donald Trump during the UNGA may not take place.
According to the organisation, members of the Trump administration are unlikely to arrange a private meeting between Trump and Tinubu because of the allegations surrounding the Nigerian president’s past.
The firm, however, acknowledged that Tinubu, as Nigeria’s president, would be able to travel to New York and attend the UN General Assembly under the access and transit protections available to representatives of UN member states.
“We look forward to President Tinubu attending the UNGA next month. Unfortunately for President Tinubu, he is going to be embarrassed at the UN,” the firm stated.
It further claimed that world leaders attending the UNGA would be aware of allegations linking Tinubu to heroin trafficking.
The organisation also said it had plans to draw public attention to the allegations in New York if it received the necessary authorisation.
The claims come amid an ongoing legal dispute in the United States over access to law-enforcement records relating to Tinubu. The records sought include documents from the FBI and DEA, with Tinubu’s legal team opposing the release of portions of the files.
However, the ongoing Freedom of Information Act case does not itself constitute a criminal prosecution or establish that Tinubu committed a drug-trafficking offence.
The controversy has continued to generate political debate in Nigeria, particularly as political parties and opposition figures increasingly focus on Tinubu’s US records ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
