The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Ogun State has arrested a woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.
Drivetvnews gathered that the substance was reportedly intended for her son, Dare Sowunmi, an inmate said to be on death row at the facility.
According to the NCoS spokesperson in Ogun State, Olayinka Odukoya, the woman was arrested around 1:33 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the prison’s main entrance.
Officials reportedly discovered a substance suspected to be “Colos,” a psychoactive synthetic drug, concealed inside a sachet of beverage powder.
The package was allegedly being delivered to Dare Sowunmi when correctional officers detected it and detained his mother.
Following the interception, the suspect was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Ogun State Controller of Corrections, Abioye Adesina, commended the officers for maintaining vigilance and enforcing security procedures at the facility.
He reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, contraband and other activities capable of compromising the security of custodial centres.
The correctional service also warned members of the public against attempting to introduce prohibited items into its facilities, stressing that offenders would face legal consequences.
