Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential running mate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the number of governors backing President Bola Tinubu will not automatically secure his victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso made the remark during a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday.
The former Kano State governor argued that the performance of many governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) could work against the party in the next election.
He maintained that having more than 30 governors does not make victory certain, recalling that former President Goodluck Jonathan lost his re-election bid in 2015 despite being the incumbent.
Kwankwaso said the experience of Jonathan should serve as a reminder that political control at the state level does not necessarily guarantee victory at the federal level.
He also criticised the performance of APC governors, alleging that some of them would struggle to campaign based on what he described as their poor record in office.
According to him, the electorate would ultimately determine the outcome of the 2027 election, regardless of the number of governors supporting any candidate.
