The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue citizens held by kidnappers and strengthen the protection of communities facing security threats.
Drivetvnews gathered that Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the call on Tuesday as the upper chamber resumed plenary after its annual recess, which began on July 23, 2026.
Akpabio said the Senate would use legislation, budgetary measures and its oversight responsibilities to address insecurity, flooding and the rising cost of living affecting Nigerians.
He urged security agencies to intensify operations aimed at rescuing abducted Nigerians and protecting communities considered vulnerable to attacks.
According to him, the Senate will review existing measures and consider additional legislative and budgetary interventions where necessary to tackle the country’s security challenges.
Akpabio stressed that the continued captivity of even one Nigerian remained a matter of national concern.
He said government institutions had a responsibility to protect citizens from security threats and should not leave vulnerable communities to face danger without adequate support.
The Senate President also said the resumption of legislative activities should focus on addressing the challenges Nigerians continued to face while lawmakers were on recess.
He noted that although Senate plenary had been suspended since July 23, the difficulties confronting Nigerians had continued.
Akpabio said the effectiveness of government should ultimately be reflected in safer communities, improved livelihoods and a stronger country for present and future generations.
He expressed particular concern about the abduction of Nigerians by armed groups, stressing that sympathy alone was insufficient to address the situation.
He said the Senate would continue to exercise its constitutional responsibilities to ensure that the security and welfare of Nigerians remain key priorities.
