African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the reported abduction of 20 travellers, including prospective National Youth Service Corps members, in Imo State.
Atiku described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that although some of those abducted had been rescued, others were still being held.
He called on the Federal Government, Imo State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release and safe return of everyone still in captivity.
The former Vice President also raised concerns over the continued captivity of more than 70 pupils and students reportedly abducted from Mussa and Lassa communities in Borno State.
He urged authorities to provide affected families with regular updates and give the public clearer information about efforts to rescue the victims.
Atiku criticised the Tinubu administration, recalling its promise that savings from the removal of fuel subsidy would support security funding. He argued that Nigerians continue to face kidnapping threats on roads, in communities and around schools.
According to him, young Nigerians are facing insecurity at different stages, from secondary school through university and now during journeys to NYSC orientation camps.
He also questioned the allocation of large pipeline security contracts to companies allegedly connected to political interests, arguing that protecting citizens should remain the primary responsibility of government.
Atiku prayed for the immediate and safe rescue of all abducted persons and said his commitment to building what he described as a safer and more affordable Nigeria remained firm.
He said such a country should provide young Nigerians with opportunities to create, build and prosper.
