A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died after collapsing in a hotel room following an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
Drivetvnews gathered that Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman and later became unconscious in the room.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, disclosing that three people had been arrested in connection with the case.
The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report on October 5, 2026, that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
According to her, the lecturer later sent the woman to purchase water, but she returned to find him lying dead in the room.
Ikoedem said the hotel owner, manager and the woman were currently in police custody as investigations continued.
She added that Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university.
He said the matter concerned the lecturer’s private life and that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The police investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
