A 69-year-old commercial bus driver, Waidi Saheed, is currently in police custody following allegations of fatally striking a 10-year-old, known as Chukwudi, along the Iganmu-Mile 2 Expressway in Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday when the driver of the Nissan Coastal commercial bus, registered as JJE-134 XK, reportedly hit the victim due to speeding.
According to a police source, the deceased and his father were standing on a culvert near Doyin bus stop when the driver’s vehicle collided with the child, causing fatal injuries to his skull.
Bernard, the father of the victim, mentioned that he and his children were en route to church around 7 a.m. when the tragic incident unfolded. The driver, identified as Waidi Saheed, was allegedly driving at high speed when the collision occurred, resulting in the immediate death of the 10-year-old.
Following the accident, some troublemakers assaulted the police officers with bottles and stones while they were attempting to remove the victim’s body. However, reinforcements from patrol teams helped to disperse the attackers.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, confirmed the incident and stated that the deceased’s body had been transported to the morgue at Yaba General Hospital. Both the driver and the vehicle involved in the accident are under police custody as investigations continue.
This tragic event echoes a recent incident where a bus rapid transit driver, Sunday Bukola, also caused the death of a five-year-old child named Malik in the Palmgrove area of Onipanu, Lagos State, as previously reported by Drivetvnews.
