In the Olomore Housing Estate of Abeokuta, Ogun State, a sorrowful event unfolded as a 15-year-old girl lost her life due to electrocution while fetching water from a well. The incident, which occurred late at night around 11:50 pm on a Sunday, sent shockwaves through the community.

The sequence of events leading to the tragedy is heartbreaking. With a power outage engulfing the compound, the girl went to the well to retrieve water. However, fate took a cruel turn when electricity was suddenly restored while she was still in the process of drawing water. The unsuspecting girl came into contact with a live cable connected to the pumping machine inside the well, leading to the fatal electrocution.

The confirmation of the girl’s death by Omolola Odutola, the state Police Public Relations Officer, added official weight to the devastating news. According to reports, Onyekachi Silas reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa, detailing the tragic circumstances surrounding the girl’s demise.

The victim, described as the younger sister of Onyekachi Silas’s brother’s wife, resided with them in the estate. The sudden loss of life under such tragic circumstances left the family and the community reeling in shock and disbelief.

As authorities initiated an investigation into the incident, the immediate focus was on understanding the cause of the electrocution and ensuring that similar tragedies could be prevented in the future. Meanwhile, the girl’s remains were taken to the Oke Lantoro morgue, marking the beginning of a somber process of mourning and closure for her loved ones.

The heartbreaking story serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by electrical hazards, especially in environments where safety measures may be lacking or overlooked. It underscores the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety protocols to prevent such tragic accidents from occurring again.
