The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the dangers of using second-hand tyres, commonly referred to as ‘tokunbo tyres.’ This directive aims to address the frequent road crashes attributed to these tyres.
Comptroller James Ojo delivered the warning during a press conference on Monday in Ota, Ogun State. He elaborated that the use of these tyres is a significant factor in road accidents both within the state and nationwide.
Ojo advised the public to opt for new tyres rather than used ones, highlighting that new tyres offer greater durability and safety on the road. Despite the current economic challenges, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety to prevent unnecessary fatalities.
He explained that ‘Tokunbo tyres’ are often unsuitable for highways because many have surpassed their recommended lifespan since their manufacture. Continued use beyond this period poses serious risks to motorists and their safety.
The comptroller reaffirmed the Customs Service’s dedication to safeguarding the local economy and ensuring road safety while maintaining the integrity of the nation’s borders.
