Students at the University of Ibadan, organized as Helpless and Concerned Students, have issued an open letter to President Bola Tinubu regarding the recent hike in undergraduate tuition fees.

This increase has compelled many students to seek financial assistance online, worsening the difficulties posed by Nigeria’s current economic situation.

In a statement signed by Solomon Emiola on Thursday, the group asserted that the fee increase jeopardizes their academic goals and threatens their future. They urged President Tinubu to take action and alleviate what they describe as a critical situation.

The letter was also directed to important officials, including the Minister of Education and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission. The students raised important concerns about the rationale behind the fee hike, noting that the federal government already funds staff salaries. They argued that existing financial resources from TETFUND and donor agencies should be adequate for infrastructure and development needs.

Additionally, the group questioned the necessity of higher fees given the university’s significant income from privatized facilities and other sources. They called for a reassessment of the proposed increase to protect their educational opportunities.

Emiola stated, “This proposed increase has overshadowed our academic endeavors and threatens our aspirations. We earnestly request your intervention to help us navigate this crisis.”

The students accused the university administration of lacking transparency and accountability. They expressed concern that the fee increase was announced without proper approval from the governing council.

Emiola continued, “We urge you to ensure that Chief Bisi Akande’s council thoroughly reviews this decision. When was the University of Ibadan’s financial records last audited since the external audit in 2020? We seek transparency concerning various university projects and funding.”

The group appealed to President Tinubu to prioritize national interests, stating, “Amid rising inflation and unmet minimum wage promises, our parents are struggling. Education is a fundamental right and should not be treated as a commodity.”

Emiola concluded by urging the president to reconsider the fee hike, investigate the university’s financial practices, and promote transparency and accountability.
