Former Communication Minister, Adebayo Shittu, has expressed concern over the rising poverty rate in Nigeria, pointing out that many citizens have been reduced to begging.

During an appearance on the AIT program Focus Nigeria, Shittu shared personal anecdotes illustrating how the country’s economic challenges have forced individuals into desperate situations. He recounted receiving a call from someone in Bauchi who asked for N1,000 to buy food, explaining that the caller had not eaten for two days. Shittu also mentioned a woman who reached out 30 times in one day, requesting N3,000, a sum that he, at the time, was unable to provide.

Shittu argued that poverty has been manipulated as a political tool in Nigeria, with many citizens prioritizing immediate financial assistance over the capabilities of politicians when it comes time to vote. He stated, “When you approach such people to seek their votes, they are not concerned about your potential actions or plans. Their focus is on what you can give them right now.”

In contrast to the public perception of political appointees, Shittu emphasized that he does not have substantial wealth from his time in office, noting that he did not engage in corrupt practices during his tenure under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2019. He added that life after a political appointment can be difficult for those who leave office without wealth acquired through illicit means.

Shittu explained that he now relies on the monthly allowances from his 10 graduate children to cover his living expenses.
