A Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Kafanchan, Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, has been killed by suspected bandits in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Before his death, Father Okechukwu served as the parish priest of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area.
The Chancellor of the Kafanchan Catholic Archdiocese, Reverend Father Jacob Shanet, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement obtained by Drivetvnews on Wednesday.
According to Shanet, Okechukwu was abducted from his residence on Tuesday around 9:15 PM. His death was confirmed the following morning, on Ash Wednesday.
The reason for his killing has not yet been determined.
“This devastating loss has left us heartbroken,” Shanet stated. “Father Sylvester was a devoted priest who dedicated his life to serving God and spreading messages of peace, love, and hope.
“He was always there for his parishioners, offering spiritual guidance and support. His untimely passing has left a deep void in our diocesan community, and we share in the grief felt by his family, friends, and all who knew him.”
Shanet called on the faithful to pray for the repose of Okechukwu’s soul and encouraged priests, religious members, and lay faithful to offer Holy Masses, Rosaries, and prayers in his honor.
He also urged the youth and members of the Takad community to remain calm and refrain from seeking revenge, emphasizing the importance of peace. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, for confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
