The Niger State Government has announced that the death toll from the recent flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area has climbed to 161.
In a statement issued in Minna, Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, reported that three more bodies were discovered this week. Two were recovered on Tuesday evening, and another was found on Wednesday. All the victims have been buried.
Usman offered condolences to the grieving families and acknowledged the contributions of individuals and organizations that have provided support to the affected communities.
“We deeply appreciate the kindness and generosity of everyone who has extended help—through financial donations, essential supplies, or other forms of assistance. Your support has brought relief to many families facing difficult circumstances,” the statement said.
He further assured the public that the state government remains committed to assisting all those impacted by the disaster and is actively working to ensure aid reaches every affected area.
“As we mourn this significant loss, we stand in solidarity with the people of Mokwa and will continue to do everything possible to support them,” Usman stated.
The flooding, which was caused by several days of intense rainfall, led to the destruction of numerous homes, the displacement of hundreds, and severe damage to local infrastructure.
