Some parents in Niger State have surrendered their children to the police after the minors were accused of killing a 10-year-old herder, Abubakar Lawal, and injuring another boy during an attack in Karaku community, Rafi Local Government Area.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the development on Friday, describing it as a case of suspected culpable homicide.

According to him, the incident happened on August 11, when Lawal and a nine-year-old boy, Umar, were returning from grazing their sheep. They were reportedly confronted by four minors identified as Aliyu (10), Abdullahi (6), Maryam (10), and Jika (4).

During the clash, Aliyu allegedly struck both victims with a stick, leaving them with serious injuries. They were taken to Kagara General Hospital, where Lawal was later confirmed dead, while Umar remains under medical care.

Abiodun explained that on August 14, the parents of the suspects voluntarily handed their children over to the police. He added that the case is still under investigation and will be forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further action.

He stated:
“On August 12, 2025, at about 7:30 a.m., a report was received that on the previous day, around 5:30 p.m., two children, Abubakar Lawal (10) and Umar (9), were returning home from grazing when they were attacked by Aliyu (10), Abdullahi (6), Maryam (10), and Jika (4).
“In the course of the fight, Aliyu allegedly hit the victims with a stick, causing serious injuries. Both were rushed to Kagara General Hospital, but unfortunately, Lawal was confirmed dead, while Umar is still receiving treatment.
“Investigations are ongoing, and the juvenile suspects, brought in by their parents, are currently being questioned. The matter will soon be transferred to SCID Minna for proper handling.”
