Security operatives in Kaduna have arrested a suspected vote buyer found with N25,963,000 in cash just hours before the state’s bye-elections.

The suspect, identified as Shehu Aliyu Patangi, was apprehended around 3:30 a.m. at a hotel along Turunku Road by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force working with the Department of State Services (DSS).

A statement from the Kaduna State Police Command explained that the money was allegedly meant to bribe voters and compromise the integrity of the polls.

Police spokesperson DSP Mansir Hassan confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect confessed to the offence and begged for leniency.

Quoting the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, he said:
“The suspect was caught with N25.9 million suspected to be for voter inducement. He admitted to the act and pleaded for mercy. Let it be clear that anyone who attempts to sabotage the electoral process will face the law.”

The Commissioner warned that the command would clamp down on anyone involved in vote buying, thuggery, violence, or acts capable of disrupting the elections.

The police further revealed that intelligence reports indicated plans by some politicians to trigger unrest. To forestall such actions, security personnel have been deployed to polling stations, collation centres, and other sensitive areas across the state.

“The Command will take firm action against troublemakers. Regardless of their position, anyone found engaging in intimidation, violence, or electoral malpractice will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement read.

Authorities also assured residents of adequate security and encouraged eligible voters to participate peacefully in the elections.
