Two farmers were killed and crops destroyed in a fresh attack by armed herders at Goh village, Naka, Gwer West LGA, Benue State, sparking renewed calls for government action.

Two farmers were reportedly killed on Thursday during an attack by armed herders at Goh village, Naka, in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

The victims, identified as Monday Orlovuu and a friend, were harvesting crops when they were ambushed. Their farms are located about four kilometres from Naka, the council headquarters.

A local resident, Lanshim, disclosed that the incident happened less than two days after herders had grazed their cattle on several farmlands, destroying harvests.

According to him, the farmers had returned to salvage what remained of their crops, fearing further losses, but were attacked and killed in the process.

“They worked hard to cultivate these crops. They only went to harvest them but ended up losing their lives,” Lanshim said. “Our people are being driven from their communities, and any attempt to farm comes with the risk of deadly attacks.”

He added that the killings occurred shortly after the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government visited the area to assess earlier damages caused by the same herders.

Residents have appealed to authorities to take urgent measures to end the repeated assaults and ensure their safety.

Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
