Renowned Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi, faced significant backlash after a video of her ministering went viral. The video captured Alabi uttering the word ‘Iyalaya,’ which the Yoruba community views as offensive.

During her performance, Alabi was seen praising veteran gospel singer Bola Are, regarding her as an elder in the industry. However, Alabi’s repeated use of the phrase ‘iyalaya,’ often associated with unruly behavior, raised eyebrows. She emphasized honoring Are’s talent and hard work in her address to the audience.

@iamthommie expressed surprise at Alabi’s use of such language, questioning her authenticity in leading worship.

Meanwhile, @victorbademosi labeled Alabi as shameless, envious, and malicious, criticizing her actions.

Deyemi of Lagos questioned why Alabi engaged in conflict despite her elevated status, suggesting it might be an unnecessary competition within the gospel sphere.

@TheOgbeniOpa hinted at a larger conflict within Christianity, expressing a desire to distance himself from such disputes.

@YemieFash hinted that Alabi’s recent behavior might stem from a previous altercation with colleague Alaseyori and diverted attention to Bola Are’s attire at the event.
