Tragedy struck in Obagaji, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, as five children drowned after a canoe carrying them and their father capsized while they were returning home from the farm.
The sad incident occurred on Sunday evening when a farmer, identified as Ameh, took his six children to the farm to harvest crops. On their way back, the canoe reportedly lost balance due to the heavy load of farm produce and overturned in the river.
Eyewitnesses said local divers immediately began rescue efforts but were only able to save Ameh and one of his children. The remaining five children were found dead after the search.
Confirming the development, the Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, said the accident was caused by overloading.
“The man and his six children went to the farm to harvest crops, but while returning, their canoe capsized. Sadly, five of the children lost their lives, while the father and one child survived,” he stated.
James described the incident as devastating and extended condolences to the affected family. He added that the local authorities would collaborate with traditional and community leaders to promote safer practices on waterways.
Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comments were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or text messages.
