The All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate in the August 15, 2026, Osun State election have commenced the process of withdrawing their petition challenging Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory.
Counsel to the APC and its candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, Seyi Oyagbile, filed a motion before the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal seeking permission to withdraw the petition.
The motion, dated September 8, 2026, was filed at the tribunal’s office within the premises of the Osun State High Court in Osogbo.
The development came a day after notices of two separate petitions were displayed on the tribunal’s notice board.
The APC petition, numbered EPT/Os/Gov/01/2026, had listed Oyebamiji and the APC as petitioners, with Adeleke, the Accord Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission as respondents.
However, the latest process filed by Oyagbile, titled “Notice of Motion to Withdraw Petition,” seeks an order allowing the petitioners to discontinue the case.
The motion gave “Decision of Petitioner” as the reason for the withdrawal.
Oyagbile confirmed that the notice had been formally filed, saying the process was aimed at withdrawing the petition.
The move followed an earlier position by members of the APC legal team in Osun State, who said they had not agreed to challenge the election result at the tribunal.
A member of the legal team, Adekunle Adegoke, said consultations with Oyebamiji and other party leaders after the election resulted in a decision not to pursue litigation.
He explained that the decision was intended to reduce political tension and allow peace to prevail in the state.
Meanwhile, controversy has also surrounded a separate petition purportedly filed by the Peoples Democratic Party.
PDP National Treasurer and Osun chieftain, Diran Odeyemi, said the party did not authorise any lawyer to challenge the election outcome on its behalf.
Odeyemi alleged that the individuals behind the petition were impostors and called on the Nigerian Bar Association and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee to investigate the matter.
The PDP petition had been listed as EPT/Os/Gov/02/2026, with INEC, the Accord Party and Adeleke named as respondents.
