A 28-year-old man, Joseph Dauda Mwanti, has been killed in a late-night attack on Wereng community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack, which took place around 9 p.m. on Monday, also left two others, including 33-year-old Joshua Mwanvwang, seriously injured.

A community youth leader, Solomon Mwantiri, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as another tragic assault on innocent residents of the area.

“We woke up this morning to sad news. One of our young men was killed and two others were wounded in another attack on Wereng community,” he said.

The Berom Youths Moulder Association also condemned the incident in a statement signed by its National President, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri. According to the group, the attackers were believed to have come from the Fass settlement in Jol community.

“This attack happened despite early warning alerts sent to the authorities,” the statement noted, calling for urgent and effective security intervention to prevent more violence.

The association further urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies. It warned that continued inaction could force communities to defend themselves.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off at the time of reporting.

Recent weeks have witnessed similar violent incidents across Plateau. On Sunday, a farmer identified as Bitrus Dakwan was killed in his home during an attack in Kubon community, Mangu LGA. Last weekend, ten people were reportedly killed in separate attacks in Kwi (Riyom LGA) and Pushit (Mangu LGA).

Local groups continue to call for stronger security measures to protect communities from recurring armed attacks.
