Veteran Nigerian musician, Innocent Onyebuchi, popularly known as Daddy Fresh, has opened up about his deteriorating health, revealing that he has been bedridden for more than two years and is now struggling both physically and financially.
His condition came to public attention after actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod shared a video of his hospital visit to the ailing artiste. In the clip posted on Facebook, Afod urged Nigerians to rally around the veteran singer, describing his state as “terrible” and stressing that “Daddy Fresh must not die.”
In the video, Daddy Fresh, dressed in a blue sleeveless top, appeared frail and initially struggled to recognize Afod. The singer, expressing disbelief, said, “I thought I was hallucinating again. I’ve been looking for you for a while, but I didn’t know how to reach you. Maybe God sent you to me.”
Speaking about his health challenges, Daddy Fresh explained that he has been battling multiple complications affecting his kidney, liver, eyesight, and nerves (neuropathy). He added that he frequently experiences hallucinations and can no longer walk without assistance.
“I’ve been seeing people that others can’t see. My blood level is dangerously low at 25%, and I need an urgent blood transfusion. I fall a lot because I can’t stand on my own,” he said.
The veteran artiste also revealed that his illness has completely drained his finances. He lamented being on the verge of eviction from his home, saying he is considering selling his belongings to pay his rent.
“I have just a few days left in my house because of rent. They’ve given me a quit notice. I don’t even know where to go next,” he said sadly.
Daddy Fresh further suggested that his condition might not be natural, hinting that some unseen forces could be behind his suffering. Still, he maintained faith that better days would come, saying Afod’s visit gave him renewed hope.
“Seeing someone I didn’t expect to see like Afod means something good has started,” he added.
Kunle Afod, after offering him financial assistance, appealed to Nigerians, the music industry, and the entertainment community to come together in support of Daddy Fresh.
“This man was one of Nigeria’s finest music artists. He’s been sick for years, and it’s heartbreaking to see him like this. Please, Nigerians and entertainers, let’s not forget him. We need to keep him alive,” Afod pleaded.
It was earlier reported in February 2024 that Daddy Fresh had suffered a partial stroke for nearly 30 months. In an interview then, he shared that simple gestures like calls or messages gave him strength amid the pain.
“Each unexpected call or message reminds me that someone still cares. I trust God that this phase will pass, and I’ll bounce back stronger,” he said at the time.
