Armed attackers invaded Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, early Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
Members of the Kiri Vigilante Group immediately responded to the assault, confronting the gunmen and preventing the abduction of students. All learners who were initially taken during the attack were recovered through the operation.
Community sources confirmed that no student is currently held by the kidnappers, crediting the outcome to the rapid intervention of local security volunteers.
The rescue operation, however, resulted in the death of a vigilante officer who was part of the defense effort. Residents also reported that another victim, identified as a Hausa man, lost his life during the incident.
The assault adds to a growing pattern of mass kidnappings across Nigeria’s north-central states. More than 400 people—mostly schoolchildren—have been abducted since mid-November, sparking outrage from global organizations.
Between November 17 and 21 alone, several school attacks were recorded. Twenty-four students were seized in Kebbi State, while a separate raid in Papiri, Niger State, led to the abduction of over 300 pupils and school workers.
International bodies, including the United Nations, have urged Nigeria to intensify lawful measures against bandit groups and improve protection for vulnerable communities.
