The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a police officer seen in a viral video rough-handling a commercial bus conductor in Ikorodu.

The footage, which surfaced online and was reviewed by PUNCH Online, shows an officer in camouflage struggling with a half-clothed conductor inside a commercial bus. In the video, passengers can be heard shouting “Leave this boy,” while the conductor cries out, “Police don kill me.” Some commuters also appeared to push the officer away.

In a statement on Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi said the incident occurred during a joint operation involving police officers and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

According to the police, the confrontation began after a commercial bus driver allegedly used his vehicle to block the road, obstructing traffic and causing heavy gridlock in the Ikorodu area.

Adebisi explained that the conductor tried to evade arrest by pulling off his clothes, which led to the chaotic scene captured in the viral video.

Despite the conductor’s behaviour, Adebisi confirmed that the officer involved has been identified and is currently under investigation to determine whether his actions were appropriate.

The conductor has been contacted and is expected to meet with the Commissioner of Police on Monday. The bus has also been seized and is now in police custody.

Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh urged Lagos residents to obey the law and report any police misconduct, assuring the public that all complaints will be addressed fairly. He also warned that dramatizing lawful arrest or obstructing officers will not be tolerated.

The command emphasized its commitment to transparency and said the outcome of the investigation would be made public when concluded.
