The senate will today, December 3, begin the screening of Christopher Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff, for the position of minister of defence.
The announcement was made by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele through a statement from his media office. He described the screening as an important step toward strengthening internal security and consolidating peace efforts nationwide.
Musa’s nomination follows the resignation of former defence minister Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down due to health-related issues.
According to Bamidele, President Bola Tinubu has forwarded Musa’s name to Senate President Godswill Akpabio for confirmation. The communication from the president is expected to be formally presented during today’s plenary session, after which the screening will begin in line with constitutional requirements.
Bamidele said the senate would give the nomination urgent attention, noting that the country is at a critical stage in its fight against banditry, terrorism, and other security threats.
He added that the ongoing state of emergency on national security demands close cooperation between the executive and the legislature. Screening the new defence minister, he said, is one of the ways both arms of government can demonstrate their commitment to restoring stability across the country.
