Five students of Rivers State University abducted from the institution’s satellite campus in Emuoha Local Government Area have been rescued unharmed.
The students were kidnapped on Tuesday, sparking widespread panic on the campus and prompting a protest in which students demanded their relocation to the university’s main campus. In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi temporarily shut down academic activities at the Emuoha campus and directed all students living there to vacate the area.
Confirming the rescue on Thursday, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the students were recovered during a coordinated operation at Rumuodogo 2. The operation was carried out by police tactical units, other security agencies and cooperating members of the local community.
Iringe-Koko stated that the rescued students — Prince London, Azubuike Kelechukwu, Elizabeth Aniete, Onyebuchi Precious and London Sampson — had been taken to the hospital for medical assessment.
She added that security agencies are intensifying efforts to track down the suspected cultists responsible for the abduction.
