A family meeting in Delta State ended in tragedy after a 47-year-old man allegedly killed his first cousin during an argument over a ₦1,000 burial contribution refund.
The incident occurred on December 12, 2025, in Ughelli South, and was confirmed by the Delta State Police Command.
According to the police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, members of the family had gathered after returning from the burial of a relative when a disagreement broke out over the refund of a small financial contribution made for the ceremony.
The disagreement reportedly escalated when the suspect insisted on immediate repayment of the ₦1,000, leading to a physical confrontation. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly struck his 42-year-old cousin, who later died from the injuries sustained.
Police said several family members, including the deceased, had tried to calm the suspect, but he refused to de-escalate the situation. The suspect later claimed the incident was accidental and expressed regret, stating that he did not intend to cause death.
He explained that the money in question was part of a customary burial contribution that is usually returned to contributors after funeral rites are concluded.
Reacting to the incident, the police warned members of the public against allowing minor disagreements to turn violent. The command stressed that uncontrolled anger during conflicts can result in serious crimes, including manslaughter and murder.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody.
The case adds to a growing list of fatal family disputes reported in different parts of the country, highlighting the deadly consequences of unresolved conflicts and poor anger management.
