Eleven people lost their lives while nine others, including the driver, sustained injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred on Christmas Day in Beguwa village, along Sankara Road in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The crash reportedly happened around midday as residents and Christian worshippers marked the Christmas celebration across the state.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the vehicle was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control, leading to the deadly collision. A resident, Malam Sani, told reporters that the driver ignored the narrow and busy nature of the road and failed to slow down while approaching a bend near the village.
Another witness, Aisha Inuwa, described the scene as distressing, noting that several passengers died instantly while others were trapped beneath the vehicle. According to her, villagers struggled for hours to rescue survivors from the wreckage.
Lawal Musa, who also witnessed the incident, said the vehicle appeared to be in poor condition and was moving at excessive speed before the crash. He added that suspected brake failure may have contributed to the accident.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, described the crash as tragic and said investigations had commenced. He confirmed that 11 victims died, while nine others were receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
Adam stated that the driver would be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department once he recovers, adding that appropriate charges would be filed for reckless and dangerous driving.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during festive periods when traffic volume increases, and appealed to the public to remain calm as authorities conclude their investigation.
The Jigawa crash came just days after another deadly incident in Lagos, where two people reportedly died following a diesel tanker explosion along the Badagry Expressway.
