The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a suspected armed robber, identified as Nicholas Nweke, who allegedly targeted victims at bus stops and other public areas.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Nweke was caught in the act while attempting to rob a man. During the arrest, the police recovered a pump-action rifle, five spent cartridges, an Itel mobile phone, and N1,200 in cash.

SP Ikenga explained that the arrest took place on December 25, following the courageous action of the intended victim. Police officers attached to the Central Police Station, Awka, responded promptly and were able to disarm and detain the suspect at the scene.

The statement read, in part:

“Thanks to the timely response of our operatives and the bravery of the victim, Nicholas Nweke, a suspected armed robber, was apprehended. Items recovered include a pump-action rifle, five spent cartridges, a mobile phone, and cash.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nweke confronted the victim, demanding his phone and valuables. When the victim resisted, the suspect allegedly discharged his firearm, injuring two bystanders. The injured individuals were promptly taken to a nearby hospital and are reported to be stable.

The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a detailed investigation, with updates expected as the inquiry progresses.

This arrest follows a recent operation in which five suspected armed robbers, posing as vigilantes, were captured while attempting to rob passengers on a shuttle bus at Ring Road, Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area. During that operation, the police recovered two pump-action rifles, five live cartridges, a shuttle bus, face masks, and other incriminating items.

The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting residents and urged the public to continue providing timely information to support ongoing security efforts.
