A devastating fire outbreak at a residential property on Bola Street in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State has resulted in the death of a 103-year-old woman and the destruction of multiple homes and shops.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the incident was reported at about noon on Friday. The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the distress call was received.

On arrival, officials found a bungalow with attached shops already consumed by flames. Preliminary findings indicated that the fire started in one of the rooms before spreading rapidly to other parts of the building. The exact cause of the blaze had not been determined at the time of reporting.

Despite swift emergency response and containment efforts, the elderly woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was confirmed dead after assessments were carried out at the scene.

LASEMA disclosed that the fire affected eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops, and several household items. The victim’s body was recovered and handed over to her family, while the fire was fully extinguished after coordinated efforts by the agency’s Light Rescue Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, and other emergency responders. Rescue and recovery operations were subsequently concluded.

The incident adds to concerns over fire-related fatalities in Lagos. Earlier reports by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service revealed that the agency attended to over 2,600 emergency incidents in 2025, with fire outbreaks accounting for the majority and resulting in numerous casualties across the state.
