Eleven people have been confirmed dead, while seven others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident along the Benin–Asaba highway in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident on Tuesday. According to the Sector Commander, Cyril Mathew, the crash occurred on Saturday and involved a commercial 18-seater bus.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus, which was travelling toward Lagos, attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with an oncoming one. The impact of the crash led to multiple casualties at the scene.
FRSC rescue teams were immediately deployed to the area and evacuated the injured victims to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The bodies of those who lost their lives were recovered and taken to a morgue.
Mathew warned motorists against dangerous overtaking and reckless driving, stressing that adherence to traffic rules remains the most effective way to reduce road accidents.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Tuesday, a minibus driver died in a multiple-vehicle crash involving a TATA bus and a minibus at the Independence Tunnel inward Maryland on Ikorodu Road, Lagos. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident, noting that its rescue and recovery team was on site to clear the vehicles and manage traffic.
