Electoral Fraud Can Be Reduced If Nigerians Fast During Elections — Cleric

A Nigerian cleric, Prophet Sam Olu-Alo, has urged Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission’s proposed timetable for the 2027 general elections, insisting that the chosen dates should not be politicised.

Olu-Alo said holding the elections during the Muslim fasting period could help reduce electoral malpractice, as the sacred season would encourage sincerity and fear of God among voters and political leaders.

INEC had earlier announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections would hold on February 20, 2027, while governorship and state House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Speaking with journalists at Jesus City Camp along the Lekki/Epe Expressway in Lagos after his church’s 41-day fasting and prayer programme, the cleric dismissed criticisms surrounding the timing of the polls.

According to him, fasting promotes truth and discourages manipulation, making it a suitable period for elections.

He also noted that elections have previously been held during Christian fasting seasons without controversy, stressing that Nigerians should not treat the timetable as an issue of religious discrimination.

Olu-Alo further revealed that special prayers were offered for Nigeria during the 41-day spiritual exercise, including prayers for those working for the nation’s progress and against individuals believed to be opposing peace and development.

He called on INEC to maintain the election timetable, advising Nigerians to focus on peaceful participation rather than religious sentiments.
