A Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, has allegedly been killed in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has said.
NICASA, through its National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said the 58-year-old cleric, an indigene of Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was killed at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, on September 4, 2026.
The association alleged that two suspects gained access to Fakunle’s residence and shot him. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.
NICASA condemned the killing and called on the South African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible and ensure they face justice.
Onyekwelu said the incident had been reported to the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg, while a murder case was opened at Jeppe Police Station.
He urged the South African Police Service and other relevant authorities to handle the investigation with urgency and transparency.
NICASA also appealed to Nigerian diplomatic officials in South Africa to maintain communication with the South African authorities and monitor the investigation until the case is resolved.
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, was contacted for comment but had not responded as of the time of filing the report.
