Some Nigerians have reportedly received money from suspected bandits during a TikTok livestream after sharing their bank account details for a giveaway.
The claim was made by business analyst Bolaji Fesomade, who alleged that several users submitted their account numbers during the livestream and were subsequently credited with money said to have originated from ransom payments collected through kidnappings.
According to him, the incident highlights how some citizens may knowingly or unknowingly encourage criminal activities. He warned that individuals who receive funds linked to criminal operations could face legal consequences if security agencies trace the transactions.
Another social media user, identified as Danny of Owerri, supported the claim, alleging that the individuals behind the livestream openly informed participants that the money being distributed came from ransom proceeds. Despite the disclosure, some viewers reportedly continued to submit their account details in hopes of receiving funds.
The report sparked widespread reactions online. While many condemned the alleged action and called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute anyone involved, others argued that economic hardship may have influenced such decisions.
Legal practitioner Foundational Egi Nupe expressed disbelief at the reports, questioning why anyone would willingly provide bank details to suspected criminals.
Although discussions about the incident gained traction on social media, independent verification has remained difficult. Searches for videos directly showing the alleged giveaway reportedly produced no results, and there is currently no publicly available evidence confirming that the event occurred as described.
The report comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of social media platforms by criminal groups to publicise their activities, display wealth, and interact with online audiences.
