Nigerian Army Explains Delay in Soldiers’ Feeding Allowance Payment, Dismisses Diversion Claims

The Nigerian Army has clarified the reasons behind the delay in disbursing food allowances to soldiers stationed at the Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project in Niger state, where they provide security for Chinese workers.

Contrary to reports suggesting that senior officers had misappropriated the three-month Ration Cash Allowances (RCA) designated for the soldiers, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, issued a statement addressing the issue on Monday.

Brig.-Gen. Nwachukwu stated that the delay in payment was a result of the Nigerian Army waiting for the funds to be received from the relevant institution. He emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, to zero tolerance for financial misappropriation and the welfare of its troops.

He explained, “Preliminary investigation reveals that troops deployed at the Chinese Company in Niger state have always been paid in tranches by the Nigerian Army on receipt of the funds from the institution concerned. Accordingly, the last tranche payment of RCA by the affected institution for the troops deployed, elapsed on 28 February 2023.”

Furthermore, to alleviate the impact of staggered payments, daily provisions were made to feed the troops as a routine measure. The statement emphasized that the troops’ RCA had not been diverted by any senior officers or individuals mentioned in the publication.

Brig.-Gen. Nwachukwu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining integrity, transparency, and accountability in managing troops’ welfare. He highlighted that the welfare of soldiers is a top priority under Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja’s leadership, aligning with his Command Philosophy of providing “Sound Administration” for army personnel.

In conclusion, the statement emphasized that the Nigerian Army recognizes the importance of caring for its personnel’s welfare and well-being, acknowledging its positive impact on their overall morale.
