Mr. Aku Bakari, a government employee, brought his wife, Mary, before a Customary Court in Nyanya on Friday, accusing her of excessive involvement in church activities.Residing in Nyanya, Abuja, the petitioner claimed in his divorce petition that Mary had neglected her roles as a wife and mother, prioritizing church over family responsibilities.Expressing his grievances, he stated, “My wife no longer dedicates time to me and our children; she is always engrossed in church activities, even spending nights there from Friday to Sunday. She shows little concern for whether we have meals or not.”The petitioner asserted that Mary’s devotion to the church led her to abandon her spousal duties. He attempted to dissuade her from attending the church he deemed problematic, but she remained unyielding.Their marital bliss reportedly started unraveling in 2010 when he observed changes in Mary’s behavior, including alterations in her dressing style and the abandonment of accessories, attributing them to religious beliefs.”She stopped attending our family church, the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (NCCN), and began attending another church where she was allegedly being influenced negatively. Despite my objections, she persisted. It is on these grounds that I seek a divorce,” he explained.Mary, a cleaner, refuted the allegations in court. The presiding judge, Doocivir Yawe, advised the couple to reconcile for the sake of their children, adjourning the case until January 30 for further proceedings.
