The federal government has approved an increase in the monthly stipend for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, raising it from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. This was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC.

The new allowance will be retroactively applied starting from July 2024, following a letter of approval issued by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission. The letter, dated September 25, 2024, was signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta.

According to Naija News, this increase aligns with the recent approval of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, a decision made by President Bola Tinubu.

Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, expressed his gratitude to the government for its dedication to the well-being of corps members. He believes this raise will uplift the morale of the corps members and enhance their dedication to national service.

The statement reads: “The Federal Government has sanctioned the increase in corps members’ monthly stipends to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024. This is in accordance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, as conveyed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by Chairman Mr. Ekpo Nta.”

It also noted that prior to this, Brigadier General Ahmed had met with the Chairman of the Commission, advocating for better welfare for corps members. He expressed his appreciation to the government for this timely decision, believing that it would provide relief and further motivate the corps members in their service to the nation.
