The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), has explained how the devastation during the 2020 #EndSARS protests hindered the investigation into the death of popular rapper Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as MohBad. His passing on September 12, 2023, was initially attributed to natural causes, but public skepticism has led to calls for a more thorough investigation.

Despite an autopsy expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death, the report has only fueled ongoing debates, affecting his family, friends, associates, and the wider Nigerian music scene.

During a press conference on Monday, Pedro announced that the Lagos State government plans to begin legal proceedings regarding MohBad’s death. He noted that the destruction of the Lagos Forensic Laboratory during the protests significantly delayed the investigation process.

He stated, “I acknowledge there has been a delay in the case, largely due to the time required for thorough investigation. Forensic analysis and toxicology are crucial components. It’s essential to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure any resulting case presented in court is strong and can lead to a conviction.”

Pedro emphasized that the same individuals who voice concerns about delays may also criticize the justice system if a rushed process leads to a quick dismissal of a case. He assured that while the toxicology report from the United States has been received and is with the coroner, MohBad’s family has requested to conduct their own forensic analysis.

However, he stressed that this should not impede the ongoing proceedings now that the report is available. He expressed confidence that legal advice would soon be ready and that those responsible would face prosecution based on the evidence at hand.

Pedro also highlighted the impact of the destroyed forensic facility, stating that if it had not been compromised, the case might have reached a conclusion sooner, eliminating the need for international analysis, which is costly. He concluded by affirming the commitment to ensuring justice in MohBad’s case.
