Suspected herders have destroyed over 60 farmlands in Plateau State, leaving 170 farmers devastated and raising fears of hunger and worsening food insecurity.

Suspected armed herders have destroyed more than 60 farmlands in Rim, a community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving residents in fear of widespread hunger and economic hardship.

The attack, which reportedly took place on Monday, was confirmed by the Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM), whose leader, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, described it as a calculated act of terrorism designed to impoverish the people.

According to Mwantiri, the destroyed farmlands cover over 150 hectares and are valued at more than ₦100 million, with at least 170 farmers affected. He named some victims as Moses Kwon Bitrus, Jonathan Badung, Fedelise Bwede, and Sylvanus Bwede.

“This is not just vandalism; it is a direct attack on food security,” Mwantiri said. “The destruction of these farmlands is one of the most dangerous forms of terrorism because it aims to push the people into poverty and hunger.”

He noted that the incident defied the Federal Government’s recent declaration of a state of emergency on food security and urged authorities to step up efforts to protect farmers.

Mwantiri called on the government to provide relief for the victims and ensure immediate intervention to prevent further attacks.

Affected farmers, including Moses Bitrus, whose maize plantation was completely destroyed, pleaded for urgent assistance, warning that the state could face severe food shortages if the situation persists.

The Plateau State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the incident. However, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina assured residents during a press briefing on Tuesday that the force is working to restore peace in the state.
