Renowned Nigerian evangelist and widely regarded father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has passed away.

According to a statement issued by his family on Monday, 13 October, the cleric died on 6 October 2025 at the age of 80.

Describing his passing, the family wrote, “A faithful soldier has been called to rest.” They praised his lifelong commitment to evangelism, describing him as a man who “dedicated more than six decades to preaching the gospel, teaching the Word, and demonstrating God’s power through prophetic ministry.”

The statement further noted that his ministry impacted millions of people both within Nigeria and around the world. “He was a spiritual general, loving husband, devoted father, and mentor to many. His life remains a testament to God’s love and grace,” it added.

The family said further details about his burial arrangements would be announced later.

Rev. Ukpai was the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Although originally from Ohafia, Abia State, he spent most of his life in Uyo, where he hosted thousands of worshippers every Wednesday at his ministry’s cathedral.

Born on 7 January 1945, Ukpai marked his 80th birthday earlier this year. During the celebration, his followers reportedly gifted him ₦80 million in appreciation of his lifelong service to God and humanity.

At the event, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno described him as “God’s gift to the state.”

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, also attended the celebration and delivered a sermon. Adeboye shared how Ukpai provided him comfort and strength after the loss of his son, calling him “a very special man of God.”

Recalling their first meeting more than 40 years ago at a crusade in Lagos, Adeboye said he had since admired Ukpai’s spiritual depth and humility. “When I look at great men like him, I pray that as I grow older, I can follow in his footsteps,” Adeboye said, drawing laughter from the congregation.

He thanked God for Ukpai’s exemplary life and ministry, saying he felt “deeply honored” to celebrate such a servant of God.

Rev. Uma Ukpai leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and inspiration to millions across generations.
