The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 16 suspected members of the Aiye Confraternity during an operation at The Polytechnic Ibadan.
Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade disclosed that the suspects—comprising 14 men and two women—were apprehended following intelligence reports about a planned gathering by the group within the institution.
According to the police, the operation was carried out after obtaining approval from the school authorities. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reportedly led the team of officers to the location identified as the group’s meeting point.
Authorities said the suspects were arrested at and around the venue to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.
Items recovered during the operation included two locally made guns, two pistols, 16 live cartridges, axes, and various charms believed to be linked to cult activities.
Preliminary findings indicate that some of the suspects had previously been under surveillance for alleged involvement in violent crimes, including murder and other cult-related offences in the state.
The police command stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of their activities and to track down other individuals who may have escaped arrest.
Reaffirming its stance, the command assured residents of its commitment to tackling cultism and other criminal activities, while urging the public to remain alert and continue sharing useful information with security agencies.
